Discover the county of Cartaxo through the Wine Route

Situated on the north bank of the Tagus river, the county of Cartaxo is a region of contrasts where the rural and urban mingle harmoniously. Colorful and restful landscape, which varied mosaic of land sown, surrounded by beautiful villages, the region of Cartaxo offers the visitor a pleasant journey through the "ribatejano habitat" dominated by vineyards whose production contributes to the famous wines of Cartaxo. Discover this county, through its eight parishes, is an attractive go "Wine Route" and know the culture and daily life of a hospitable people, proud of the wealth of their customs, their festivals, their folklore, its gastronomy and its bullfighting tradition.


The discovery of the municipality of Cartaxo can be done via two routes, the "Field" and "Neighborhood", which, taken together, provide the visitor a pleasant and unforgettable ride.

Itinerary "Neighborhood":

Cartaxo - Cruise Manuelino (National Mon.), collection of miniatures handcrafted Athenaeum AC, Rural and Wine Museum.

Vale da Pinta - Pit S. Bartholomew Parish Church.
Ereira, Lapa and Pontével - Beautiful landscapes dominated by vineyards, local living, this beautiful and friendly village Church of Pontével (Mon. public interest), pleasant. Return to Cartaxo or continued by itinerary Field.

Itinerary "Field":

Vila Chã de Ourique - Evocative monument of the Battle of Ourique, the Solar Buzzwords (Mon. public interest).

Valada - Dikes, picnic area, Palhota (typical small fishing village), landscape Tagus River and marshland.

Vale da Pedra - Return to Cartaxo or continued by Neighborhood itinerary. These routes can be supplemented with visits to Agricultural Farms and Wineries on the Wine Route inserted.

The Cartaxo is a beautiful Ribatejana town, county seat, located in the center of the country, a place of fertile land, the very famous full-bodied red wine produced here.


Every year in November, takes place the Feira dos Santos, one of the most famous and oldest in region (dating back to the seventeenth century) alongside the great Wine Festival in May that gathers many visitors and attractions.

Geography of the region

Situated about 60 kms from Lisbon, the county of Cartaxo bordered to the north by the municipalities of Santarém, and Azambuja, south with the municipalities of Azambuja and Salvaterra de Magos, the east with the municipalities of Santarém and Almeirim, and west again with the county of Azambuja. Cartaxo is a Portuguese city of Santarém District composed of 8 parishes, rich in customs and traditions which are: Queen of the Harvest, Fair dos Santos, folklore, crafts, traditions of Vine and Wine and commemoration of the day of Campino.
